Final Review

Caption: Hogwarts appears in a cloud of fog near England. Hogwarts has been the most famous school for witch craft and wizardry.

Caption: Carrie stands out by the sunset as she awaits the return of her husband. Her husband has been away in Iraq for several years fighting for his country.

Caption: A crowd of people await the arrival of the queen of England. The queen was scheduled to arrive three days ago.

Photography Rules:

Rule of thirds:this is a compositional rule. This means that the photo should be equally divided into nine parts. No part should have more subject matter than the other.

2. Balancing Elements- All elements in your photo should be balanced. Placing your subject matter more towards the left or right of the photo makes for a more appealing photograph.

3. Leading Lines: This rule refers to visible lines that lead the viewer's eyes to the subject of the photo.

4. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition): The photo should have some symmetry or patterns to make the photo more appealing. However you also want to include a break in the symmetry to provide tension.

5. Viewpoint- This refers to how you shoot your photo. Be sure to include unconventional angles that will make the photo more interesting.

6. Background-  You want to be sure that the background doesn't distract away from the subject. A clear background works best.

7. Create depth- This means that you want to include the foreground, middle ground, and background in your photo to make it look less two dimensional.

8. Framing- This is when you want to cut off your photo at the right position. Frame your photo so that there are not parts of people's body parts cut off in the photo.

9. Cropping- Be sure to remember that you want to emphasize the subject in your photo. So sometimes cropping, will allow the viewer to have a closer look at the subject.

10. Mergers and avoiding them: You want to avoid awkward cut-offs in your photo, which are considered mergers. Try to avoid them by being aware of your surroundings and not have any stray people in the background.

Shutter Speed: This is the amount of time that you will allow the shutter of the camera to stay open. The faster the shutter speed that more exposure you will get and be able to receive a shot in motion.

Aperture: A hole or opening through which light travels. This effects the lighting of your photo.

ISO: ISo also determines the amount of light let into the camera.

Folder:
You will need to click on the icon on the desktop that allows you to open all the servers (Server Drives). Then click   on JStudents. AFter that click on photojournalism, then find your class period, and the folder with your name on it.

Magazine Covers:
In order to have a good magazine cover you have to have a visually appealing photo and subject matter. Make sure that there is good composition and lighting. Make sure that there isn't a busy background that will distract viewers. Also, you want to make sure that this is something original and don't copy another cover from the past.

Ethics in Photography:
Acceptable: Things that are acceptable in photo manipulation are things such as correcting a red eye or a blurry background. You can also use this to correct any small stray things in the background.

Not Acceptable: It is not acceptable to completely change your subject's face/body in photoshop. You can not completely clear their face of any blemishes or spots. You also can't change their eye color, skin color, etc. This will be deceiving the audience and is not ethical.

Portraits:
Formal: This is when the subject matter knows that they are going to be in the photo. They most likely have a backdrop behind them. They are also in a formal pose and are sitting up straight. They are probably in a specific pose that the photographer wants them to be in. Ex. school photos.

Informal: An informal portrait is when the subject is acting in a normal way and are not posing. They are probably being silly or are with a group of friends.

Environmental: This is when the subject is being photographed in their natural environment. For example a basketball player should be shot playing basketball or posing on a basketball court.

Favorite Cover

This LIFE special edition To the Moon and Back chronicles the first moon landing, brought about by the courage of the Apollo 11 astronauts and the thousands of people who supported their mission. On the magazine cover is a picture of Buzz Aldrin, taken by fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong. Along with color photographs of this historic walk on the moon, there are biographical sketches of Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins. There is also a history of manned space exploration from the first single orbit around the earth orbit to the launch of Apollo 11.

This is my favorite photo because I love that the astronaut is in their natural environment, which is in space, and you can see the reflection in the mask. I also like that the photographer chose to position the astronaut towards the right of the photo, which goes well with the text that is aligned at the left of the cover. If I were passing by this magazine in the store, I would want to read the article covering the photo on the cover. I also like the lighting, and how the dark background emphasizes the subject more.

Things to focus on for my Magazine Cover

1.) I want to make sure that my cover stands out and is not overcrowded by the background.
2.)I want to make sure that my cover does not copy another student's magazine cover, be sure to make it original!
3.) Make sure my photo evokes an emotion from the people that will be looking at it.
4.) I want to make sure not to mess with the photo in photoshop too much, because this will distract away from the subject and photo.
5.) Make sure that the photo has good composition, not blurry, and is not cropped, which might make the magazine cover look bad.

Lytro Warm-Up

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo?

When you click the photo you are able to re-focus the photo. So you can focus in on the foreground or the background.
2. How does this new camera work?
This new camera allows you to refocus the photo after you have already shot it. It allows you to take in all the light in only one shot.

3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about)
The photographer would have to be aware of all the surroundings that appear in the photo. In order to get the shot right, you would have to make sure the two subjects are close and will appear.

4. Is it worth the money?

I think it is because it saves the photographer a lot more time and gives you options for what photo looks best. I think it's really cool that you can re-focus after you have taken the photo.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II

Best Tips:

1.) Use props! - make the picture more interesting
2.) Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That’s part of the point, after all.
3.) Get Closer- The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects.

Environmental Portrait: I really liked this photo because it shows the worker in their natural environment and it is very "raw". This is a candid photo and it does not looked forced.

Environmental Portrait: I really liked this photo because it is a close up of the subject. I also really like the background and all of the lights, it shows their natural environment which is Times Square.

Photography Self Portrait:

I like this photo because the photographer uses props and introduces a unique way to show his reflection. It shows him in his natural environment and reveals a little bit about his character.

I like this photo because the photographer is holding up a photo of her face instead of just taking a plain photo. I think this photo is unique and an interesting self portrait.

Casual Self portrait: I like this photo because the two subjects look like they are having fun and are enjoying themselves. The portrait looks very casual and they don't look forced to smile or anything like that .
I like this photo because i think that the background is really pretty and very casual. The family look like they are having fun and are in everyday attire. I also like the balance and lighting of this photo.

Portrait Assignment:

For my portrait assignment I will be shooting portraits of Marina. I will be taking the photos outside near the courtyard by the red hall. I want the photos to successfully show Marina's personality and style. I will want to focus on the lighting and balance.

Self Portraits and Portraits

Self-Portrait:

Professional Portraits:

I think a good photo consists of clarity, balance, and colors. I like photos that show the personality of the subject, especially in self portraits or portraits. I also think a good photo should be balanced and have no mergers that could distract from the subject.

I think i would like to focus more on portraits, rather than self-portraits because I could express the individuality of the person being shot.

Ethics in Fashion

.1.)  List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
  • Neck was made longer
  • eyes were made bigger and moved
  • moved the shoulders lower
  • made her lips bigger/fuller
2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
I believe that it is not ethically acceptable to change someone's appearance like this because young girls that look at this ad are led to believe that they should look like this. When in reality, the model doesn't even look like that. They are instilling a certain type of beauty that they think everyone should look like.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?

Yes, I think it would be more ethically wrong if someone decided to manipulate a photo simply because they believed the person looked ugly or had some sort of defect.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?

I think basic changes such as changing the lighting or fixing a red eye are ok when manipulating a photo. I don't think that you have to make drastic changes in order to improve the photo.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.

I think the difference between these two is the what is real and what is fake. Photojournalism focuses more on the realities of people and life. Typically, photographers capture their subjects "raw" and in a candid pose. When it comes to fashion photography everything is posed and timed. The models are typically are photo shopped and made to look perfect.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?

Like I previously stated, I believe that photojournalism is much more realistic. However, fashion photography is fixed and manipulated. You will never see an non- photoshopped photo in fashion photography. I think this affects the ethical practice in fashion photography.

Shortlist Warm- Up

Landscape: This picture is my favorite because i really love all of the colors and the skyline looks really pretty.  I also like the shadow that is reflected in the water.

Travel: This photo is my favorite because I like all of the smoke that is surrounding the man in the picutre. The background looks like there is a lot of activity going on. This is a very powerful photo.

Fashion: I really like this photo because it looks like a freeze frame. You can tell that the girl is running and I like how they captured her in the air. The scenery looks really pretty.

Family & Friendship: This is my favorite because i really like the angle that it was taken at. You can't see their faces but you can tell that they love each other. I really like the focus on their shoes and the city in the background.

Portraits: This was my favorite because i liked how you can see the reflection inside the bubble! I also like that the photographer chose to keep the photo in sepia.

Documentary: I really like this photo because of the angle and the shadow of the footprints. The lighting looks really cool in this photo.

Gardens and Plants: I chose this photo because I love all of the colors! The photographer could have chose just to take the picture at a normal angle, instead they were able to capture a picture in motion.

Wildlife: I liked this photo because of the light and focus on the ladybug. I like how the photographer chose to zoom in really close and the light makes the photo more dynamic.

Creative License: I really like this photo because it immediately caught my attention. I didn't even realize that this was photoshopped. I liked the light that shines down on the person. This photo gives off a carefree vibe/mood.

Action & Movement: I really like this photo because it of the contrast between light and dark. I also like how the subject is flying in the air, this must have been a really hard photo to capture.

Ethics and Manipulation

A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.

The main point of the story is that photo manipulation is okay to use to fix some photos, but shouldn't be used to completely transform the photo. The story mentions that they photoshopped the photo so that it would have an entire other missile being shot in the air.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.

I think this type of photo editing is unethical because it deceives the public. People are led to believe one thing, however it is a lie and has been transformed. Photo editing is okay when you are trying to better the photo and fix the lighting or focus. However, when you start manipulating how people look or what stays in the photo, i think this is considered unethical.

Most Unethical Photo:

I think this photo is the most unethical because it is decieving the audience of this admissions handout. The school is trying to make their campus seem more diverse by including a student of color in a photo, when he really isn't even included in the original photo. People that are viewing this are led to believe that there is some diversity, however there probably really isn't. I think it's unethical because they actually took another unrelated photo of someone and included it in the photo.

Least Unethical Photo:

I believe this photo is the least unethical because the person who photoshopped this photo was simply trying to remove the pole in the background. They probably only did this because it was in a awkward place and was a merger. The removal of the pole does not change the subject of the photo or does not take away from the importance of the photo.

Abandoned Theme Park

  1. If i could visit any of these amusement park i would visit the Nara Dreamland park in Tokyo. I would want to visit here because it resembles Disneyland and it looks pretty fun with the castle and the rollercoasters. It also looks like there is a go kart ride and that looks really fun. The indoor wooden rollercoaster looks really fun and exciting.
  2. photo ^^
  3. Abandoned hotels, the mall, concerts, africa/desert, moutain areas.
  4. The photographer Andy Biggs has photography covering africa and the landscape/animals.

5.) I'm interested in visiting africa to take photos because I'm really interested in all of the wild animals and the great scenery that is out there. I would love to take photos of all the animals going about their everyday lives. It would be cool to see how the animals interact and where they get their food from. I love that there is nothing but open space and lots of possibilities for dynamic photos. Overall i think Africa would be a good place to go in order to see many different animals up close and personal.

6.) I would probably need a lot of equipment because I would be out in the middle of nowhere most of the time. I'd need a camera stand, a camera that has a very fast shutter speed. I would also need water and lots of food since there is a possibility of getting lost out in the desert. I would need a lot of money in order to afford the plane tickets to go to africa. I would also probably have to have someone that is familiar with the area to help me out. I would need to take caution when being around the wild animals to ensure I don't get hurt.

National Geographic- Warm Up

2. Tell me why this is your favorite photo (write at least 3 sentences)

This is my favorite photo because it is right in the midst of the action. The photo exemplifies horror and is very dynamic. It looks really cool how the lightening is shown and how the tornado/twister is about to form. I really like how dark and eerie the photo is.

3. Think about your world, what photo would you take to submit to this photo contest?

When I think of my world, I instantly think of the music scene here in austin. I would probably sumbit a photo from a music festival/concert that is in Austin. I would want to illustrate the excitement and chaos that takes place at concerts such as south by southwest or ACL.

American Soldier Slide Show

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?

To me the most powerful image is from the basic training in Iraq, where all the soldiers are standing around in uniform preparing for battle. This is really dynamic and i had an instant reaction when i saw this picture.

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?

I think the sequence of photos titled, Army blues is the most powerful. It really shows how close the soldiers are once they are shipped to another part of the world and are away from their loved ones. It really causes the viewer to feel their pain, worries, and excitement as they go off to Iraq.
c. How do the images work together to tell a story?

The images work together by telling the whole story involved in being an American soldier. It starts from the beginning when you sign up, and til the end when the soldiers arrive back home from war. The photos each tell a story but they all work together to express the same idea.

A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?

The verbs are usually written in present tense.

B. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

The captions enhance the photographs by providing background and history to the photo. It allows the viewer to understand the entire meaning of the photo instead of being left to guess what's happening.

4.

a.) Photo: Chapter 1: Signing up - photo is 2nd to last
Ian's mom tears up as she watches her son enlist in the army and prepare for send off to Iraq.

Photo: Chapter 2: in the army- photo is 3rd in 3rd row.
Ian is terrified as he starts his first day in army training, which proves to be physically and emotionally exhausting.

Photo: Chapter 7: Life in Iraq- photo is 2nd in 3rd row
Ian and his fellow troops prepare to go to battle and are geared up and in uniform.

A. How do these other features enhance the photographs?
These features enhance the photographs by providing much more background to the photos. Viewers are really able to connect to Ian Fisher and understand what he and his family are going through in this process.

B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
Videos are better than photographs because they give the viewers a chance to understand what is fully going on and also help connect the viewer to the story and people involved. One example is Perry's speech as the GOP debate, viewers are actually able to see how Perry responds and can form their own opinions on him.

C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.

Sometimes photos are better than videos because they get right to the point and they are a snapshot in time. So, a photo can be much more dramatic and shocking. One example from the Denver Post web site is a photo of the veterans day parade in Denver. We see multiple citizens walking the streets supporting their country.

Funny Captions

Caption: Individuals are about to test out the latest automobile invention. Anthony and Shelly are waiting to test the car, little do they know, it will fall apart!

Caption: Marvin wants to sit down. Will you join him?

Julian and his friends didn't have a basketball hoop, so they invented a new one. I think they might become more famous than Bill Gates..

Cool Video

On your blog tell me what you think about the video in a post called Cool Video. What would you like to see featured? Make 1 suggestion on what the maker of the video could work on to improve the movie.

I really like this video, and it makes me really excited about the online yearbook and I want to see more. I'd like to see more features of pep rallies, daily school life, and games. I think the maker of the video could improve on including more close ups of the people in the video.

Instagram Phone photography

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?

We could do a theme based on creativity and then shoot photos of people in a dance, science, art class, etc. We could also do a theme of happiness or school spirit.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?

I think that it would be really interesting to see how the photos turn out if we only use camera phones. We can see the differences in the quality of the photo.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
We could put the mural on a wall when you enter campus from the front entrance, or we could put it somewhere where a lot of student activity happens. We could probably put it somewhere by the office area.

Warm Up

1. What do you have to do on the camera to make this type of photo?
Usually you will capture a multiple standard photograph and then use exposure bracketing, which you can then merge into an HDR image.

2. Look up a Canon T3 on google and tell me if it has the ability to shoot bracketed photos?

Yes a Canon T3 has the ability to shoot bracketed photos.

3. Is there a place on campus we could take a series of photos like this?

Probably, we could take a series of photos around the outside areas of campus. For example, the courtyard, football field, front entrance, bus area, etc.

4. Do a google image search for HDR photos and find your favorite, post it on your blog, tell me why you picked that photo and then tell me what techniques (rules of photography) the photographer used.

I picked this photo because it captured my attention and the background looks really pretty. It is a very dynamic shot, because the photographer placed the subject in the center allowing the viewer's to easily know where to look at. The photographer followed the rule of thirds and simplicity. There are no stray figures in the background to take away from the subject. Overall I think this picture is really pretty!

Fixed Photo Shoot Reflection

1. What did you learn about the camera when you took these photos?

While taking these photos, I learned how to operate the camera. Before this photo shoot, I wasn't sure how to change the ISO or the shutter speed. However, I now know what buttons to press when I want to change these settings .

2. What do you notice about all the photos and the way they look?

While looking at these photos I notice that each time i changed the aperture or shutter speed the photo would come out blurry, washed out, or dark. Each time I changed the settings the photo would also become more or less focused.

3. Can you tell the difference between each ISO? Explain how.

Yes, you can tell the difference between each ISO number. While reviewing the pictures I noticed that some looked completely clear, while others with different ISO's would always look blurry. Some photos never came out perfect.

4. What does this tell you about ISOs and what it does when you change it when you take pictures.

This tells us that whenever you change the ISO it affects the amount of light that is allowed into your camera. When you mix the ISO with the aperture/shutter speed settings this will affect the quality of your picture. Some photos may come out dark, too blurry, washed out, etc.

5. What about focus? Can you see a difference in the photos? Tell me what differences and similarities you see.

When looking over the photos I didn't really notice any difference in focus. Mostly, there was a difference in the lighting of the photo. All of my photos never came out perfectly clear, instead they were still a bit blurry.

6. Post the best photo you took on your blog. Make sure to label the following things: ISO, Shutter Speed, F-stop, Distance, Focal Length, Lighting.

 ISO; 400
Shutter Speed: 1/500
F-Stop: F8.0
Distance: Approx. 10 ft. away - far shot
Focal Length: 27.0 mm
Lighting:  Mostly sunny

7. What do you need to concentrate on when you go out to shoot next time when you have to shoot in Manual setting?

Next time when i'm out shooting I really need to concentrate on the ISO and aperture. These seem to be the two things that really make a difference in a photo. If I can master these two settings, I will be able to come out with the best looking picture.

Black and White Photography-Part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them?

When first looking at my photographers photos, I noticed how he used the camera settings to manipulate the picture. Some of his photos look really cool because the background is blurry, and this makes the subject seem more dynamic. All of his photos deal with regular people and i think the way he portrays them in his photos is really unique and visually appealing.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

Photo 1:
I see a woman who is being pushed around in the crowd, on her way home from the store. This woman is in a hurry and needs to get home to her husband. I smell the sweat of all the people crowding around the streets, and they have probably been walking outside for awhile. I hear the careless chatter coming from people walking the streets. I taste the thick musky air when you are outside. Outside it is very humid and hot. I feel bad for this woman because she seems scared and confused.

Photo 2:
I see a man who is about to buy tickets for a train ride later in the day. I smell the freshly made food coming from the small restraunt right beside the building that sells train tickets. I can hear the music coming from the guitar that the man standing on the side of the street is playing. I taste the sizzling food and pastries from the restraunt. I feel rushed or in a hurry, because the photo is blurry and everyone in the photo is blurred.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer.

I would like to either make a powerpoint presentation or a blog devoted to my photographer. I would illustrate to people why he is important and some of his best works.

SIM CAM

F4: I think that this F stop looks best at 1/500 sec.
The background is pretty much blurry and all you can see is the couple.

F5.6: this photo looks best at 1/60 of a second.
The background is a bit more visible, however it is still blurry and the subjects are unclear.

F8: This photo looks best at 1/60th sec.
The background is now somewhat visible and you can tell there are buildings behind the couple.

F11: This photo looks best at 1/60th sec.
The background is now pretty much clear and there is a bunch of buildings and windows.

F16: This photo looks best at 1/30th sec.
The background is completely clear and you can now see both the couple and the setting.

F22: This photo looks best at 1/8th sec.
The background is again still visible and clear.

What is happening to the people themselves at slow Shutter Speeds?
The people are pretty much the same at all shutter speeds, however they either get more pixelated or blurry as the shutter speeds change.

What could the photographer do to help combat this problem?
The photographer could shoot in the same setting and use a tripod to eliminate any other unwanted changing factors. -

What is the lowest Shutter Speed do you think a photographer can hand-hold the camera?
Slowest shutter speed might be 1/80th.

Camera Sim: Last Stop

How well did you do?
On the first quiz i missed only 3. I feel like i understand how to determine the F stop and their purpose.
On the 2nd quiz i scored 92% and feel like i understand shutter speed really well.

Do you understand Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO better now?

Yes, i believe i understand these photography components much better now. However, i'm still a little unclear about aperture.

ISO

 ISO 200
1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?

The advantages would be that the picture would be much clearer and will be able to see the players and subjects better.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?

Usually use a low ISO when there is low light

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

the higher the ISO the more light it receives

4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?
3200, 120, 200, 250, etc.

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.
"Auto Mode" - Shutter speed and aperture are automatically chosen by the camera.
"Aperture Priority mode" - you set the lens aperture and the shutter speed is automatically set by the camera.
"Manual Mode" - you set both the aperture and shutter speed manually.
"Shutter Priority mode" - you set the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture.

3.) 3. 4 , 5.6 , 8 , 11 , 16 , 22.

Aperture

F16
F2.8

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
We would relate the eye to the aperture.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture The lighter it is, the higher the Aperture The darker the photo is.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?

A smaller aperture will bring all foreground objects in focus and a larger aperture will make the background blurry
